Local Beaches & Newsletters

Culburra Beach is located 22 kms south-east of Nowra and is surrounded by water, with Lake Wollumboola to the south, Curleys Bay to the west and Culburra and Warrain Beaches to the east. Walter Burley Griffin designed the area, which like Canberra features his signature curved street design.

Access to the beach

Benjamin's Beach House is located at the end of The Strand which backs on to The Marina (the properties along this lane are on the beachfront). You can get to the beach from Benjamin’s Beach House through a local track at the end of The Strand which winds through the sand dunes. At the top of the track you will get a wonderful panoramic view of the beach and the local area. Alternate access is via the public walkway at the end of end of Palm Way, the next street along. Walk north along The Marina track along the side of the property and turn right to get to the beach.

Please note that this part of Culburra Beach is not patrolled. Lifeguards patrol from December to the end of February at each end of Culburra Beach. Closest is Crookhaven Heads at the northern end or Penguin Head at the southern end. Warrain Beach is located to the right, and access to the Nowra-Culburra Life Saving Club (Ph 4447 2038) is via Farrant Avenue. At the end of Eastbourne Street is access to Lake Wollumboola which is popular for sailing.

Newsletter March 2007

"I can't believe how "chilled" we all felt after our week away. I’ll be passing out your business cards to all our doggy friends because we had such a great time!"

- Tracey and family, Feb 07

Dear Salutation ,

Increase in visitors to the Shoalhaven

Tourism was up as much as 25% over Christmas/January, with many Sydneysiders, accustomed to traveling north, discovering the breathtaking South Coast. With a temperate climate, pristine beaches and scenic landscapes, fresh local produce including delectable seafood, and a growing wine industry, more visitors are enjoying the friendly relaxed coastal lifestyle.

Are you hoarding your annual leave?

A 2005 study by Tourism Australia found that Australian employees have 70 million days of accrued annual leave. Nearly 60% of full-time employees do not use their full entitlements each year and a third don’t take any leave at all!

Main reasons cited are the lack of resourcing and back up while on leave and increased workload before and after leave, particularly the email build up. Fitting in plans around partner and children’s commitments, even the time to organise a holiday becomes a barrier, particularly being overwhelmed by choice!

One study identified the best outcomes from holidays related to going to a warmer climate, having fewer time zone changes and participating in health improvements while on leave.

Is your dog overweight?

An RSPCA study in 2000 involving veterinary practices across Australia found that 41% of dogs surveyed were overweight or obese. As with humans, this is leading to higher rates of diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. Insufficient exercise and overfeeding are the obvious causes.

Most dogs need to be walked at least once a day to maintain a healthy weight, build endurance and muscle tone. Dogs love to check out the sights and smells and really look forward to spending time with you!

Plan your holidays now

Start scheduling your annual holiday or regular short breaks for the coming year. Benjamin's Beach House is available this April school holidays from Easter Monday, for romantic weekends away or a cosy winter retreat ($1,550 for 7 nights). Broadband internet access is available to keep in touch with the office if required.

Contact us on http://www.benjaminsbeachhouse.com.au/index.html or phone 0413 127 676 to book the ultimate relaxing break, just 2 1/2 hours drive from Sydney.

Featuring the works of various photograpers and artists, this exhibition from 2-23 December at The Photo And Artz Works Gallery encompasses several media including photographic prints, etchings, line drawings and paintings. Make sure when on holidays you call into the gallery at 6 Fairlands Street, Culburra Beach to view spectacular shots of the local area. Keep your dog cool in summer

We all know that dogs, like children should not be left in cars, especially on hot days. It is also important not to exercise your best mate in the heat of the day, especially elderly dogs, or those with very thick coats. According to Dr Kylie Kelers of the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic, "exercise on hot days should be limited to walking at a comfortable pace, wading or swimming. Dogs must have access to shade and ample fresh water during hot weather,’’ Dr Kelers said. "Ideally they should rest at the warmest time of the day’’.
Some holiday dates still available

The Shoalhaven region, located just 2 hours from Sydney is an ideal destination for a holiday or shortbreak, and the ability to take your dog with you to the beach means your pet can also enjoy time out. Christmas and January have been booked out for some time, but we still have availability in late November/mid-December, end of January and selected dates in February and March. We've been fielding enquiries for Easter and other school holidays, so why not start planning your 2007 breaks now to secure the dates you want.

Dear <Salutation>,

Get Out on the Water

A Girls Best Friend

The characteristics that women are looking for in a partner are the same as those they look for in a pooch! The recent SheSaid online survey conducted for the Petcare Information and Advisory Service asked respondents to choose the characteristics most important to them in a loved one, both human and canine. The results show that Aussie women are looking for loyalty, affection and friendship - whether they are selecting a two-legged partner or a four-legged "fur child". 73% of women said companionship was the most valued aspect of owning a dog!

Spoil yourself at Benjamins Beach House. Grab a week with the kids during the upcoming October school holidays, find time for a short break pre-Christmas or get friends and family together for the summer holidays.

Local Walking Tracks

Spring is a great time to get active and in addition to early morning walks along the Culburra beachfront, there are many bush walking tracks on the pristine south coast. Checkout the spectacular view from local Crookhaven Heads or take a short drive from Benjamin's Beach House to Currarong on the Beecroft Peninsula and head to the Point Perpendicular Lighthouse in the National Park (no dogs). Be sure to stop off at the beautiful Honeymoon Bay.

Dining Out

Congratulations to local eatery The Butter Factory Restaurant, Pyree, winner of the South Coast Regional Award for Excellence as Best Cafe/Restaurant on the lower coast. The Butter Factory is a wonderful old 19th century structure which has been transformed into a modern and stylish cafe and gallery showcasing the works of local artists. Serving contemporary Australian cuisine with an emphasis on fresh local produce and regional wines, The Butter Factory is open for dinner Thursday to Saturday and lunch Wednesday to Sunday. Car Restraints for Dogs

When travelling in the car with your dog, it is important your mate also wears a seat belt. Restraining your dog is not only essential for their own safety, but also yours as a sudden stop could cause 20 kg to fly though the cabin! Dog Car Harnesses come in several sizes and either clip into the seatbelt buckle or the inertia belt goes through a loop on the harness. Your dogs walking lead simply clicks on for ease of getting out of the car for stops along the journey!

Spring Tariffs

It's time to start thinking of spring weekends away, the October school holidays and before you know it Christmas will be upon us. The off-peak weekend rate of $625 continues until the end of August and there are still selected dates available for the summer holidays. Contact us on http://www.benjaminsbeachhouse.com.au/index.html or phone 0413 127 676 to secure your preferred dates.

"The house is fabulous and kitted out with everything we needed to have a relaxing time. The weather was wonderful so when we weren't at the beach with the dogs having a run and swim, we were sitting out on the deck enjoying the sunshine and birdsong. It's a place I'd love to visit again and I will be recommending it to my friends, both with and without furry companions."

Like any member of your family, it is important to keep you dog safe whilst traveling in the car. Buckle up your best mate with a harness that the car seatbelt loops through. Bring along your pet’s bedding and favorite toy so they feel comfortable when they arrive. You should also ensure your pet is vaccinated and has regular tick prevention treatments. For more information go to http://www.benjaminsbeachhouse.com.au/3.html
